STORYLINE
The UN peacekeeping mission in Mali (MINUSMA) bid farewell on Sunday (27 Jan) to the ten Chadian peacekeepers who perished in a complex terrorist attack against the mission’s Aguelhok camp in the Kidal region.

The deadly attack took place last Sunday led to the death of ten Chadian peacekeepers and the injury of some 25 others.

Speaking at the ceremony, Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita said the blue helmets had a beautiful mission to uphold peace, of solidarity and tolerance. Addressing the fallen soldiers, Keita said, “This fight which you lead, in the name of all of humanity, has today led to the loss of your young lives – taken in the blossom of youth. They had barely arrived on Malian soil, where they were to serve the cause of peace.”

The head of the UN mission in Mali Mahamat Saleh Annadif saluted the fallen peacekeepers and said their sacrifice “inspires us to fight even harder to end the crisis in Mali, a crisis that unfortunately is driven by the agenda of others.” He said Chad remained a crucial part of the stabilization process in the Sahel adding that the fallen would serve as examples in this cause.

MINUSMA Force Commander Dennis Gyllensporre expressed his deepest respect to Chad and the victims that their “will not be in vain.” He added, “You fell with pride at the field of honour at Aguelhok while providing a robust response, inflicting significant damage to the enemy.”
