7. SOUNDBITE (English) Danny Danon, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations:
“The Iranian machine of terror does not stop for even one moment. It is attempting to close in on us on four fronts, but it stands no chance against Israel. We will never let Iran win, not in Syria, not in Lebanon, not in Judea and Samaria, not in Gaza, not anywhere.”

“Mr. President, is it not high time for this Council to take the necessary measures to end the repeated Israel aggression against my country’s territories, or are we expected to attract the attention of the war producers on this Council by exercising our legitimate right to self-defence by responding to the Israel assault on the Damascus International civil airport with a similar [attack] on Tel Aviv airport?”

STORYLINE
Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon said the Iranian “terror machine” was attempting to close in on his country on four fronts and stressed that Israel would “never let Iran win, not in Syria, not in Lebanon, not in Judea and Samaria, not in Gaza, not anywhere.”

Addressing the Security Council today (22 Jan), Danon said the Iranian Quds Force fired a medium range missile close to the Israeli border over the weekend which was intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome defence system. He said Israel responded by targeting Iranian military infrastructure in Syria, including intelligence command and control centres, weapons warehouses and training facilities. Danon stressed that Iran “must, with no conditions, fully withdraw its military presence and militia forces from Syria; it must do so immediately.”

The Israeli ambassador said one must follow the “money trail” when countering terrorism, adding that all those trails in the Middle East lead to Iran. He said, “The Iranian payroll emboldens the worst of terrorists. The money trail starts in Tehran. It reaches the border with Iraq. It stretches across the Arab Gulf to Yemen. It extends to the tyrants in Damascus. It lands in the bank accounts of its proxy Hizbullah.”

He called on the international community to take preventive action and join Israel in its fight against Iranian terrorism. He said a first step would be to designate Hamas, Hizbullah, and Islamic Jihad as terrorist organizations. He noted that Israel would not hold back in acting alone if it must.

Syrian ambassador Bashar Jaafari said Israeli aggression against Syria would not have happen if it wasn’t for the Security Council’s failure to implement its resolutions regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Bashar Jaafari, Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations:

Jaafari said taking back the Syrian Golan Heights was a firm right for Syria which was non-negotiable and Israel’s withdrawal from the Golan Heights was a demand that would not be rescinded. He said Israel was taking dangerous systematic steps to entrench its control on the Golan Heights and impose its will on the occupied land, including by holding a meeting of the Israeli government there, and attempting to organize illegitimate local elections.

Iranian ambassador Eshagh Al Habib said Israel had systematically violated Palestinians’ inherent rights over the past 70 years, invaded all its neighbours without exception, and possessed all types of weapons of mass destruction. He said, “Through shielding Israel, the United States has rendered this Council absolutely ineffective, with respect to Israel. Consequently, Israel has been emboldened by impunity. Instead of facing punishment, it has been rewarded to continuously and brazenly commit all international crimes.”

Al Habib underscored that the “gross systematic violation of territory and sovereignty of regional countries by Israel must stop.” He said Israel must be held accountable for all breaches and stressed that all regional countries have an “inherent right to defend themselves against any armed attack by Israel.” He added that no one could “deny or suspend this right; they will decide how and when to exercise it.”
