STORYLINE
Secretary-General António Guterres today (15 Jan) joined his voice to the expressions of total solidarity with the people, the Government and the President of Kenya in condemnation of what he called a “horrible terrorist act” that took place in Nairobi this morning.

During the ceremony for the handover of the Chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China, Guterres was joined by the President of the General Assembly, María Fernanda Espinosa, who expressed her “most sincere condolences to the government and people of Kenya” for today’s terrorist attack.

She expressed solidarity “especially with the victims of these acts of violence and with their families” and “strongly” condemned “these unexplainable acts of extreme violence.”

For his part, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, also expressed solidarity and condemned the attack. He said, “together we condemn terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, no matter the origin, no matter the perpetrators. Terrorism is terrorism. We must all condemn terrorism in all its forms.”

According to press reports, al Shabab militants stormed a Nairobi hotel and office complex. Preliminary reports indicate at least one person was killed and 15 were injured.
