The head of the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, arrived in Bangui on Tuesday, 8 January. With the African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security, Smail Chergui, and other diplomats, he plans to relaunch the dialogue between the Central African Government and the armed groups under the auspices of the African Union Initiative. (AU).
"The year 2019 must be the year of dialogue, must be the year of appeasement, must be the year of reconciliation. And we are collectively determined to work and spare no effort in this direction ", said Jean-Pierre Lacroix upon is arrival.
Smail Chergui explained the reasons for this high-level meeting.
"Jean-Pierre and I decided that our first action for this year 2019 and to find ourselves together in this capital, with also the ministers of the region, neighbors of the Central African Republic, to try to give a decisive impetus to the implementation of the African initiative ", he explained.
During this four-day visit high level visit to CAR, Lacrois and Cherugi will meet with President Faustin-Archange Touadéra, the President of the National Assembly, members of the government and other Central African political actors.
