4. SOUNDBITE (English) Danny Danon, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations:
“Israel is conducting a limited operation in its territory to neutralize Hezbollah terror tunnels coming from southern Lebanon. We have spoken about this issue multiple times in the Security Council. This is a clear violation and wilful disregard of UN Security Council resolution 1701. UNIFIL’s mission is to prevent the build-up of arms and military infrastructure in Southern Lebanon. Clearly, it is not doing enough.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Danny Danon, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations:
“Israel has no interest in escalation, but we will do whatever it takes to defend our sovereignty and our citizens. I approached the Secretary-General to condemn Hezbollah’s violations and I call on the Security Council to convene as soon as possible to discuss this issue. The Security Council must condemn this terrorist threat.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Danny Danon, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations:
“I said very clearly that the operation is in our territory. So, everything you see now is in our territory. But having said that, in the past we have proven that we will take all necessary actions to protect our people. So, this is not what is happening now, but if in the future we will see threats in Lebanon, Syria, you name it, we will take pre-emptive actions as well.”
STORYLINE
Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon today (4 Dec) told reporters gathered outside the Security Council that “Israel is conducting a limited operation in its territory to neutralize Hezbollah terror tunnels coming from southern Lebanon,” which he said are “a clear violation and wilful disregard of UN Security Council resolution 1701.”

Danon said the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is tasked with preventing the build-up of arms and military infrastructure in Southern Lebanon, but “clearly, it is not doing enough.”

The Israel Ambassador stressed that “Israel has no interest in escalation,” but will do “whatever it takes to defend our sovereignty and our citizens.”

He called on Secretary-General António Guterres and the Security Council to “condemn this terrorist threat.”

Danon made clear the operations are taking place inside Israeli territory but added that “in the past we have proven that we will take all necessary actions to protect our people” and “if in the future we will see threats in Lebanon, Syria, you name it, we will take pre-emptive actions as well.”
