3. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Iván Duque Márquez, President, Colombia:
“Peace is the goal of all Colombians. And all of us, absolutely all of us, are going to work towards that goal. But peace must be rooted within the rule of law, combining the public goods of security as well as justice. Our government will work so that the process of demobilization, disarmament and reinsertion, which has advanced I recent years, succeeds.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Iván Duque Márquez, President, Colombia:
“The UN Mission in Colombia itself, as well as our own monitoring agencies, are aware that our government received a process which is fragile in several fronts. First of all, is the budgetary fragility. Many commitments were assumed without proper funding. And second, are institutional weaknesses. A complex and disperse architecture was created which has so far been unable to efficiently make progress in achieving all its objectives. But I want to reiterate in front of this Assembly, that our commitment, Colombia’s purpose, is to comply with those who have taken the genuine path of abandoning violence.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Iván Duque Márquez, President, Colombia:
In less than two years, Colombia has opened its doors to almost one million of our Colombian brothers. We have received them with affection and we will continue to do so, beyond any social or fiscal difficulties, because we are united in brotherhood. But we must call things by their name. We are experiencing the most indignant migratory and humanitarian crisis in the region’s recent history, caused by a dictatorship that has annihilated all freedoms.”

STORYLINE
The President of Colombia, Iván Duque, today (26 Sep) told the General Assembly that “peace is the goal of all Colombians,” but stressed that “peace must be rooted within the rule of law, combining the public goods of security as well as justice.”

Duque pledged to “work so that the process of demobilization, disarmament and reinsertion, which has advanced I recent years, succeeds.”

The Colombian President, who has been in office since 7 August, said “the UN Mission in Colombia itself, as well as our own monitoring agencies, are aware that our government received a process which is fragile in several fronts.”

These, he said, include a budgetary fragility, as “many commitments were assumed without proper funding, as well as institutional weaknesses, based on “a complex and disperse architecture” that was created “which has so far been unable to efficiently make progress in achieving all its objectives.”
Duque reiterated his government’s commitment “to comply with those who have taken the genuine path of abandoning violence.”

The UN Mission is tasked with verifying the reintegration of former FARC-EP members into political, economic and social life and the security guarantees for former FARC-EP members, their families and communities in the territories.

Turning to the situation in Venezuela, Duque said, “in less than two years, Colombia has opened its doors to almost one million of our Colombian brothers.
