STORYLINE
On the eve of the landmark summit between the United States and the North Korea, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commended both leaders for “pursuing a diplomatic solution” and that “peace and verifiable denuclearization must remain the clear and shared goal.”

The United States president Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un, the leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) are due to meet Tuesday (12 Jun) in Singapore.

Speaking to reporters in New York today, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said “the world is closely watching what will take place in Singapore in a few hours’ time.”

Guterres also said “the two leaders are seeking to break out of the dangerous cycle that created so much concern last year. Peace and verifiable denuclearization must remain the clear and shared goal.”

However, the Secretary-General warned that the process will not necessarily be easy.

He said “there will be inevitable ups and downs, moments of disagreement and tough negotiations. Relevant parts of the United Nations system stand ready to support this process in any way, including verification if requested by the key parties. They are the protagonists.”

Looking forward, Guterres appealed for “111 million USD to meet the immediate needs of six million of the most vulnerable people in the DPRK and said, “The people of the DPRK need our generosity and help” and underlined that “the diplomatic processes pave the way for progress on human rights issues, from family reunions to engagement with international mechanisms.”
