In a statement read today (21 May) by spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the Secretary-General said, “major challenges continue to severely affect the welfare and livelihoods of its people.”
He called on political actors “to address these challenges urgently within the framework of respect for the rule of law and human rights.”
According to news reports, President Nicolás Maduro won re-election by a wide margin amid low turnout and several countries in the region, as well as the United States, declaring the polls illegitimate.
