STORYLINE
Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon told the Security Council “there are over 80 000 Shia militants in Syria under Iranian control” training in a camp near Damascus “to commit acts of terror in Syria and across the region.”

Speaking at the Security Council’s meeting on the situation in the Middle East, Danny Danon, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations accused Iran on supporting various armed groups in order to destabilize the region.

Danon showed a satellite image of what he said it was a “Iran’s central induction and recruitment center in Syria” where, according to him, “there are over 80 000 Shia militants in Syria under Iranian control.”

Israeli ambassador said “We are presenting this image to the world, so you can understand the depth of the Iran’s involvement in Syria.”

He added “it is at this base, just over five miles from Damascus, where they are trained to commit acts of terror in Syria and across the region.”

Expressing his belief that in a few weeks, the United States will pull out of the “Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action” (JCPOA), better known as the Iran Nuclear Deal, Danon called on other stakeholders to scrap the deal as well.

He said “President Trump is focused on important changes to the current situation because he knows it would make the world safer. He knows we must change the course and we must do it now.”

However, the UK ambassador to the UN, Karen Pierce said “I would like to recall that the United Kingdom’s position on that agreement is clear and remains clear. We believe it is a crucial agreement that makes the world safer and contributes to global and regional security by neutralizing the threat of a nuclear armed Iran and we engage all partners as we take the discussion on the JCPOA forward.”

The JCPOA has been negotiated in 2015 between Iran and P5+1 – five permanent members of the Security Council, namely USA, UK, France, China and the Russian Federation – plus Germany. According to the deal, Iran gets relief from the economic sanctions imposed by the Security Council in exchange for scrapping its nuclear program for the next fifteen years.

Also speaking at the Council, the Iran’s ambassador to the UN Gholamali Khoshroo said “each time we meet here we receive news regarding illegal settlements or aggressive policies committed by the apartheid Zionist regime. The Israeli regime now works day and night to negate any right for Palestinians and entrench the occupation.”
