STORYLINE
Addressing a High-Level Meeting on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace, the President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, today (24 Apr) said that “to achieve a sustainable and lasting peace, to definitively close the door on a conflict that during over five decades has become embedded in society, it is the greatest challenge that a nation could face.”

Highlighting the challenges of peacebuilding and sustaining peace, Santos said, “just as making peace is more difficult than to make war, building peace is more difficult than silencing the guns.”

Speaking to reporters outside the General Assembly Hall, the Colombian President addressed the situation of Jesús Santrich, a leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) who was arrested on drug dealing charges after being elected to the Colombian Congress.

Santos said “accords are meant to be followed. And the accords say, any member of the FARCs who commits a crime after 1 December 2016 will be subject to ordinary justice. This is a specific case of a crime committed after the signing of the accord, and therefore subject to ordinary justice after a review by the Special Peace Court.”

The High-Level Meeting on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace takes place at UN Headquarters on 24 and 25 April 2018.
