STORYLINE
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein arrived Sunday (22 Apr) in Ethiopia for a four-day official visit where he will meet with government officials and take part in a high-level dialogue with the African Union.

He will also visit the restive region of Oromiya region on Somalia border, where violence has reportedly displaced close to million people.

Speaking of his reasons to be in Ethiopia Zeid said “one, is to visit the region of Oromiya. We said we wanted to have access to Amhara and Oromiya – and the Ethiopian authorities have granted this to us. This is a request we had made when I last visited.”

This is the second visit of the High Commissioner to Ethiopia. He was last in the horn of Africa country in May 2017. At the time he met the then Prime Minister and civil society organizations. He is scheduled to meet the current leadership of the country.

Zeid continued “second, is to meet with the new Prime Minister, Prime Minister Ahmed, who was recently appointed and who has made significant speeches when it comes to commitments to human rights – and so we want to follow up on those commitments.”

During his four-day visit he will deliver opening remarks at the African Union-United Nations High Level dialogue on human rights.

He said “Third, to meet with the African Union leadership to discuss how to construct a strategic framework with them, such that their relationship with the UN will be founded on the three pillars including human rights.”

Later he will address university students at the Addis Ababa University.
