3. SOUNDBITE (English) Brenden Varma, Spokesperson for the President of the General Assembly:
“The idea of this meeting is to promote a new approach to peace. The President feels strongly that right now the UN is focused too much on responding to conflicts once they already erupted, and he says that we need to do more to stop the wars before they actually break out. That would save countless lives, but also billions of dollars.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Amena Yassine, Senior Adviser and Team Coordinator for Peace and Security, Humanitarian and Legal Issues:
“We are actually bringing very inspiring people that really have a lot to say on peacemaking and peacebuilding. Nobel Peace Prizes, we have female leadership in the field from the UN system, but also politicians. We have representatives from the private sector and civil society.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Amena Yassine, Senior Adviser and Team Coordinator for Peace and Security, Humanitarian and Legal Issues:
“We are aiming at seeing the experience from the ground, because we are looking at peacebuilding in practice. We want to know what we doing right now, what we can do better to improve, and that is the main idea. We are not, the purpose of this meeting is not about the concept of sustaining peace, it is rather on what it means in reality, in concrete terms. That’s why we focus also on bringing people who have really experience with mediation, peacemaking, peacebuilding, so that we can hear them and learn from the experience and we hope that this is going to guide the future work of the UN too.”

STORYLINE
Ahead of a High-Level Meeting on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace convened by General Assembly President Miroslav Lajčák at UN Headquarters, his spokesperson today (20 Apr) said, “the idea of this meeting is to promote a new approach to peace.”

The spokesperson, Brenden Varma, said Lajčák “feels strongly that right now the UN is focused too much on responding to conflicts once they already erupted, and he says that we need to do more to stop the wars before they actually break out.”

The two-day meeting is expected to be the largest gathering of Heads of State and Government and Ministers at UN Headquarters since the General Debate in September 2017.

Speaking to journalists in New York, Senior Adviser and Team Coordinator for Peace and Security, Humanitarian and Legal Issues Amena Yassine, said “we are actually bringing very inspiring people that really have a lot to say on peacemaking and peacebuilding.”

Yassine said “the purpose of this meeting is not about the concept of sustaining peace, it is rather on what it means in reality, in concrete terms.”

She said the focus is “on bringing people who have really experience with mediation, peacemaking, peacebuilding, so that we can hear them and learn from the experience and we hope that this is going to guide the future work of the UN too.”

Lajčák has identified peacebuilding and sustaining peace as a key priority. The High-Level Meeting will take place on 24 and 25 April and aims to assess efforts undertaken and opportunities to strengthen the United Nations’ work on peacebuilding and sustaining peace.
