The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on Monday paid a short visit to the Central African Republic (CAR) where he was received by President Faustin Archange Touadera. De Sousa visited the military base at M'Poko airport where a 160 men special force of the Portuguese army has been installed since January 2017. MINUSCA

The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on Monday (26 March) paid a short visit to the Central African Republic (CAR) where he was received by President Faustin Archange Touadera.
De Sousa visited the military base at M'Poko airport where a 160 men special force of the Portuguese army has been installed since January 2017 as part of the United Nations Integrated Multidimensional Mission for the Stabilization of the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).
De Souza said "Portugal has very old and very deep links with the Central African Republic. Today it strengthens these links through its very competent, very efficient military, who are sensitive to the needs of the population. It is very important for Central Africans to understand that this is a service that is not only military but also humanitarian and community-based.”
Accompanied by his Minister of Defense, the President of Portugal emphasized the vital role played by Minusca and the European Union military training mission for peace.
The Portuguese President highlighted that “MINUSCA on the one hand and the European military training mission, on the other hand, play very important roles from the point of view of peace, of political, economic, social and community stabilization. The MINUSCA is essential. It plays its role with the support of a dozen countries, which means that the world understands the vital importance of this country in this region, in this continent."
President De Sousa returned to Lisbon the same day in the early evening after celebrating Easter with the Portuguese peacekeepers.
