“We do feel that Mr. Feltman’s visit was an important element in the way forward. We are not in any way taking credit, or trying to take credit for what is happening, but I think Mr. Feltman’s visit in December I think was a move in the positive direction which has led us to where we are today. The Secretary-General has always said that he was available and will do whatever he can to help facilitate the process and he remains at the disposal of all the parties involved.”

STORYLINE
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Secretary-General António Guterres was “encouraged” by the announcement of an agreement between the United States and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to hold a summit meeting by May.

Speaking to reporters in New York today (09 Mar), Dujarric said The Secretary-General would do whatever he could to help facilitate the process and remained “at the disposal of all the parties involved.”

Guterres commended “the leadership and vision of all concerned” parties and reiterated his support for all efforts towards peaceful denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions.

Asked if the recent developments were a result of UN political chief Jeffery Feltman’s visit to North Korea in December, the UN spokesperson said the visit was “an important element in the way forward.” He stressed that the UN was “not in any way taking credit, or trying to take credit for what is happening”, but added that Feltman’s visit “was a move in the positive direction which has led us to where we are today.”
