STORYLINE
UN Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator Ursula Mueller said she is visiting the Central African Republic (CAR) to focus the attention of the international community on a humanitarian crisis that “is almost forgotten.”

Mueller visited the town of Paoua in northern CAR today (20 Feb), to which over 65,000 people have been displaced. The sudden influx of displaced persons has come as a result of on-going violence and has generated overwhelming needs, adding pressure on an already vulnerable community.

The UN humanitarian office (OCHA) said the humanitarian community has been able to meet the needs of 1.3 million people in 2017 despite security and financial constraints. OCHA added that the 2017 Humanitarian Response Plan for the CAR was only 39 percent funded. Mueller said, “One out of two people in the Central African Republic are in need of humanitarian assistance and protection.”
