STORYLINE
In just one year, some 630,000 people have been forced to abandon their homes in Tanganyika Province in the southeastern part of Democratic Republic of the Congo. The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) warned of an imminent humanitarian disaster of extraordinary proportions and called for urgent action to help the displaced.

SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Jean Kiza Kambi, Congolese internally displaced person:
"They slaughtered so many people with machetes.”

Jean is one of over 630,000 people who have become internally displaced in DR Congo's Tanganyika Province. He said he was the last person to flee his village after militias burned it to the ground.

SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Jean Kiza Kambi, Congolese internally displaced person:
“They raped dozens of women."

This is Africa's worst displacement crisis. Over 4.5 million Congolese have fled their homes to escape new and existing civil conflicts across the country.

SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Jean Kiza Kambi, Congolese internally displaced person:
“I had to take all my clothes off and jump into the river. I was completely soaked. But I didn't have a choice, I was running for my life.”

SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Jean Kiza Kambi, Congolese internally displaced person:
“Only the injured were left behind.”

Survivors share stories of horrific violence. Most like 47-year-old Marie can't forget what they saw before they fled.

SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Marie Seluwa Makelo, Congolese internally displaced person:
“They beheaded people. They cut open their stomachs, remove their guts, and leave them to die. That's how they're killing people.”

For those lucky enough to survive, their ordeal is far from over. Disease and hunger stalk the displaced and even water is hard to come by.

UNHCR said the crisis in the DRC is one of the least funded in the world and shows no signs of abating. It called for urgent attention and support to prevent an imminent humanitarian disaster.
