“The security forces of this country are responsible for the protection of the people and maintenance of law and order. But we are also here to monitor the developments so that if something untowards happens, we are here to understand before it happens and we can prevent it from happening. And if it is happening, we must stop it. So, as MONUSCO we’ve got the responsibility in terms of protecting the civilians of this country, and we’ve got a responsibility for our own facilities, including our own people. So, we must be aware of what’s happening outside. That’s the idea behind the whole exercise.”

In protest of the national elections commission’s schedule ahead of the upcoming elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), civil society organizations in Goma called for a general strike.
In the line with the UN mission in the DRC’s mandate of to protect civilians, MONUSCO’s Force Commander, General Derrick Mgwebi, flew over the city by helicopter to monitor the situation.
Policemen were deployed in the town to avoid any gatherings. Civil society members tried to gather for a demonstration, but police forces did not allow it.
