4. SOUNDBITE (English) Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations:
“The occupation has imposed a heavy humanitarian and development burden on the Palestinian people. Generations of Palestinians have grown up in crowded refugee camps, many in abject poverty, and with little or no prospect of a better life for their children. 50 long years of occupation have fuelled recurring cycles of violence and retribution. They send an unmistakable message to Palestinians that their dream of statehood might never be realised.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations:
“Some think that the situation can be managed. They are all wrong. It must be resolved. Real peace cannot be achieved without a just and lasting resolution. The two-state solution is the only path to ensure that Palestinians and Israelis can realize their national and historic aspirations and live in peace, security and dignity.”
7. Med shot, Palestinian delegation
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Saeb Erekat, Member of the Palestinian Parliament for Jericho:
“Unfortunately, we don’t have a partner in Israel today. The Israeli government, headed by Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu is trying to replace the two-state solution with one state, two systems, apartheid. Ignoring facts don’t mean they don’t exist. Unfortunately, 50 years later, this current Israeli government believes that the costs for the continuation of the occupation and the status quo, is much less than the cost of peace.”
9. Wide shot, Israeli ambassador Danny Danon walks up to the podium
10. SOUNDBITE (English) Danny Danon Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations:
“50 years ago this month, Israel fought off an all-out attack, the attack aimed to destroy the world’s only Jewish state. But after six days of hard –fought battle we returned to our holiest sites in Jerusalem and reunited our divided capital. Instead of joining us in celebration of Jerusalem, the only capital in the Middle East where all religions are free, UN finds a use to host supporters of terrorism. That’s right, you heard me right, supporters of terrorism.”

STORYLINE
Speaking to a forum today (29 Jun) to mark 50 years of occupation of Palestinian territory, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said “50 long years of occupation have fuelled recurring cycles of violence and retribution” and “send an unmistakable message to Palestinians that their dream of statehood might never be realised.”

Mohammed said “the occupation has imposed a heavy humanitarian and development burden on the Palestinian people” as “generations of Palestinians have grown up in crowded refugee camps, many in abject poverty, and with little or no prospect of a better life for their children.”

The Deputy Secretary-General said “some think that the situation can be managed. They are all wrong. It must be resolved. Real peace cannot be achieved without a just and lasting resolution. The two-state solution is the only path to ensure that Palestinians and Israelis can realize their national and historic aspirations and live in peace, security and dignity.”

Also addressing the forum, a member of the Palestinian Parliament, Saeb Erekat, said “unfortunately, we don’t have a partner in Israel today. The Israeli government, headed by Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu is trying to replace the two-state solution with one state, two systems, apartheid.”

Unfortunately, he added, “50 years later, this current Israeli government believes that the costs for the continuation of the occupation and the status quo, is much less than the cost of peace.”

Earlier today, Israeli ambassador Danny Danon told reporters that 50 years ago, Israel had fought off “an all-out attack, the attack aimed to destroy the world’s only Jewish state.”

Danon said that today’s event, hosted by the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, is giving voice to “supporters of terrorism,” and accused some of the speakers of having ties to terrorist organizations.
