STORYLINE
Since April, some 30,000 refugees have arrived in Angola’s Lunda Norte province, fleeing violent attacks in the Kasai region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and partners are seeking US$65 million to help the growing number of refugees arriving in Angola from the DRC in need of basic help and urgent care

But refugee centres are filling beyond capacity.

The situation is on the brink

SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Brigite Ibompenge, DRC Refugee:
“We are receiving help here but the problem is the area is not clean. It’s not good for us.”

UNHCR and partners are asking for funds to cover the needs of this growing crisis, to offer refugees protection from violence, and a safe haven until they can return home.

SOUNDBITE (Swahili) Brigite Ibompenge, DRC Refugee:
“I feel sad because people are dying. Lives have been destroyed. We have lost all our property and businesses. All we want is peace in Congo.”

Recent arrivals include people with severe wounds and burn injuries, who have been transferred to a local hospital to receive urgent medical attention.

SOUNDBITE (English) Alessandro Telo, Registration Officer, UNHCR (English):
“The international community should know that people is arriving in desperate conditions, they are without water since days because they fled to the bush to cross the border without food they arrived really sick. We are receiving in the last days a lot of wounded and injured people.”

A steady stream of refugees continues to cross into Dundo in Lunda Norte Province. The Angolan army has transported the new arrivals from border points to the two receptions centres in Cacanda and Moussunge. Refugee reception centres, however, are already overcrowded and struggling to accommodate daily arrivals.

SOUNDBITE (English) Anna Leer, Community Services Officer, UNHCR:
“Immediately we saw the urgent need for coming in and be providing food, people haven’t eaten for almost two weeks at certain point in time, so that has been our priority.”

UNHCR is currently assisting the Angolan authorities to relocate refugees from temporary reception centres.
