6. SOUNDBITE (English) Vesna Pusic, Croatia’s Candidate for Secretary-General:
“All conflicts, in the end, are resolved through political solutions, are resolved though talking, even the worst ones. So, it makes sense to start talking right away and to understand that it will always be regional powers and countries in the region that will play an important role and have to be brought in, but the UN is there as the probably most valued and potentially most effective negotiator.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Vesna Pusic, Croatia’s Candidate for Secretary-General:
“Whoever is elected Secretary-General has to care, has to actually care about the key objectives of this organization, and without being mushy or over-sentimental, has to care about people. Because you can have as many different organizations, abbreviations, institutions, reports, procedures, facilitators. If you don’t care, you are not going to be a good Secretary General. It’s not going to help you.”
9. Various shots, applause
10. SOUNDBITE (English) Vesna Pusic, Croatia’s Candidate for Secretary-General:
“I approach human rights with the understanding that there are certain areas where the state has no business meddling, that are simply the space of the autonomy of the individual. And that should be respected. And certainly the LGBT are those types of rights.”

STORYLINE
A candidate for the post of the United Nations Secretary-General, the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Croatia, Vesna Pusic, today (13 Apr) said “if the organization is not functioning, peace, development, humanitarian assistance, human rights, all the great educational and development projects that we care for and we want to work on, are going to be just a dream.”

Over the course of three days, the official candidates – currently nine of them – are answering questions related to promoting sustainable development, how to improve efforts to create peace, how to protect human rights, how to deal with huge humanitarian catastrophes, and how to resolve challenges defined by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Pusic highlighted the importance of effective negotiators. She said even the most intractable conflicts are in the end “resolved though talking” and added that “it will always be regional powers and countries in the region that will play an important role and have to be brought in, but the UN is there as the probably most valued and potentially most effective negotiator.”

The next Secretary-General, Pusic said, “has to actually care about the key objectives of this organization, and without being mushy or over-sentimental, has to care about people.”

After the meeting, asked about her position on LGBT rights, she said “I approach human rights with the understanding that there are certain areas where the state has no business meddling, that are simply the space of the autonomy of the individual. And that should be respected. And certainly the LGBT are those types of rights.”

As part of the informal dialogues, each candidate has a televised and webcast two-hour timeslot, starting with a short oral presentation. Representatives from Member States will then ask questions, followed by the President of the General Assembly, who will ask a few of the more than 1,000 questions submitted by the general public on social media under the hashtag #UNSGcandidates.
