4. SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General:
“2015 must be a year for global action. You have recognized that in a world in which both the global population and resource constraints are growing, development finance needs a reboot. This Conference is the starting point for a new era of cooperation and global partnership. Countries are responsible for their own economic and social development, but national efforts need to be supported by an enabling international economic environment. Let us put aside what divides us and overcome narrow self-interest in favour of working together for the common well-being of humanity.”

STORYLINE
At the opening of the Third Financing for Development Conference, UN Secretary-General said “2015 must be a year for global action”.

In his remarks today (13 Jul) in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, Ban Ki-moon noted that a successful outcome on this Conference is crucial for securing an ambitious post-2015 development agenda and a comprehensive agreement on climate change.

He urged world leaders and ministers gathered this week to agree on an outcome that is commensurate in ambition with the sustainable development goals. And he called on them to exercise flexibility and compromise, and overcome narrow self-interest in favour of working together for the common well-being for humanity.

Prime Minister of Ethiopia Hailemariam Desalegn said, “Climate finance is growing too enabling developing countries both to mitigate their emissions and to adopt to the impacts of the climate change that we have already seen. And perhaps –most of all- the private sector has emerged as a crucial engine for development. Foreign direct investment is already worth over four times as much as aid.”

Also speaking at the opening event, World Bank Group president Jim Yong Kim said, “Many question whether it is possible to end extreme poverty in just 15 years. But I firmly believe that it is not only possible, but it’s within in our grasp if we commit to work together to make it happen.”

He stressed, “We will push for trillions of dollars to get billions of people an equal chance. We are part of a growing global movement that is the first generation in humankind that can end extreme poverty.”

Host country Ethiopia is showcasing its own economic success: Since the launch of a growth and transformation plan the average economic growth rate jumped to about 10 percent per year. Economist Magazine ranked Ethiopia as the World's 3rd fastest growing economy. The flower industry alone provided 200.000 new jobs.

The Third International Conference on Financing for Development gathers high-level political representatives, including Heads of State and Government, and Ministers of Finance, Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, as well as all relevant institutional stakeholders, non-governmental organizations and business sector entities.

The Conference will result in an inter-governmentally negotiated and agreed outcome, which should constitute an important contribution to and support the implementation of the post-2015 development agenda.
