Marking international Human Rights day Wednesday UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson said Wednesday the world body denounces,” the flagrant injustice of millions of people who face discrimination and abuse because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”
In a written message also marking the commemoration of the day in 1948 on which the General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, “We declare that human rights are for all of us, all the time: whoever we are and wherever we are from; no matter our class, our opinions, our sexual orientation.”
This year's observance encompasses the idea that “every day is Human Rights Day” and that “each one of us, everywhere, at all times is entitled to the full range of human rights.”
