4. SOUNDBITE (English) Lang Lang, concert pianist and UN Messenger of Peace:
“Everybody is playing with everybody for the first time and everyone has something to say [to bring] from their own culture, when they play their instruments together - from Kenya, from Venezuela, from everywhere – from China, from USA. And at the same time we all realize that music brings as much closer, you know, heart to heart, and makes the distance much smaller. And this is why after playing chamber music, after playing four hands music we feel the love.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Lang Lang, concert pianist and UN Messenger of Peace:
“Our today’s audience is not so familiar with contemporary music themes – in classical music, not in pop or hip-hop you know… But in classical music we are really trying to encourage young composers to compose more things. And you know, the UN Day is a perfect example.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Alexandra Mukiri, violinist:
“It’s just amazing how despite the boundaries that there may be, we found a way to communicate, we found a way to bond. We found a way to share these things. And this encourages this message of unity of prosperity and sort of joint happiness if I can say.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Manuel López-Gómez, conductor:
“We are very excited, we feel very honored to be a part of this and to be invited by the Lang Lang foundation to celebrate this wonderful… And as music as the universal language I think it is the best speech for today – do it through the music, with message of love, with the message of peace, of course with the message of union between every country around the world. Thank you very much.”

STORYLINE
World-renowned concert pianist and United Nations (UN) Messenger of Peace Lang Lang along with 16-time Grammy Award-winner Sting are set to perform this evening at a concert organized in observance of UN Day (24 Oct).

Speaking to the press before the concert today (24 Oct), Lang Lang explained that the orchestra for the concert was assembled from young musicians from five different continents assembled especially for the occasion.

He said that despite never playing together before and coming from different cultures, “we all realize that music brings as much closer, you know, heart to heart, and makes the distance much smaller.”

Violinist Alexandra Mukiri, a 16- year-old from Kenya said “despite the boundaries that there may be, we found a way to communicate, we found a way to bond. We found a way to share these things. And this encourages this message of unity of prosperity and sort of joint happiness if I can say.”

The conductor is Manuel López-Gómez from Venezuela, one of great talents that emerged from the Venezuelan music program “El Sistema” which provides music education to children from poor social-economic backgrounds.

He said music as the “universal language” is best suited to send the message of peace and unity between peoples.

Twenty-four October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948 when the United Nations Charter came into effect.

In 1971, the General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by Member States as a public holiday.
