STORYLINE
The International Labour Organization (ILO) kicked off the World Day Against Child Labour with the ‘Red Card to Child Labour Campaign’.
A song called 'Til Everyone Can See’, was composed for the campaign by Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger and violinist Ann Marie Simpson and features singer Pharrell Williams, Oscar winner Hans Zimmer and R&B artist LIZ.
The song was released today and can be downloaded from the ILO website where people can take part and support the Red Card campaign.
SOUNDBITE (English) Mike Einziger, Co-Composer ‘Til Everyone Can See:
“I got to spend my younger years being a kid. But lots of kids don't get the chance to spend their lives being children. They have to work.”
168 million children worldwide are working as child labourers. Many don't go to school, or have a chance at a normal childhood. More than half are in hazardous work that threatens their health and their development.
In Brazil, where the World Cup is underway, a distinctive pinwheel logo used by the global movement against child labour has been created as aerial art on Botafogo beach.
On Thursday, the ILO adopted a new legally binding protocol designed to strengthen global efforts to eliminate forced labour. There are currently an estimated 21 million forced labour victims worldwide.
A recent ILO report estimates that US$150 billion in illegal profits are made in the private economy each year through modern forms of slavery.
