Finnish troops of the U.N. Emergency Force (UNEF) took over St. Catherine's Monastery, one of the oldest Christian monasteries, in the south-central part of the Sinai peninsula, on 15 Jan., as Israeli forces left the area. The UNEF troops pitched their tents outside the buildings, and they will keep watch from there; they also established a checkpoint one mile away. A Belgian scientist has arrived at the monastery on a UNESCO mission to verify the present condition of ancient manuscripts stored there. UNEF troops found the monastery "undamaged and everything in order".
