Scholar, Consultant

Leland Goodrich was a scholar who contributed much to the development of the United Nations. A member of the International Secretariat of the United Nations Conference on International Organization in 1945, Dr. Goodrich was the secretary of the Committee on the Peaceful Settlement of International Disputes, which drafted a section on what would ultimately become the United Nations Charter. In 1960, he was appointed to the United Nations Committee on the Review of the Activities and Organization of the Secretariat. After he left the Organization, Dr. Goodrich served as a consultant to the United Nations.

The interview was conducted on 16 September 1985. Retired at the time, Dr. Goodrich reflects on the drafting of the Charter and assesses the performance of the United Nations and the Secretaries-General in relation to the original concepts in the Charter.
