Presenting the Secretary-General’s latest report on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) the Head of the United Nations Mission in the country told the Security Council that the security situation in Eastern DRC “further deteriorated” since the end of the December elections, with the M23 rebel group “marking significant advances and expanding its territory to unprecedented levels.” UNIFEED

The head of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), Valentine Rugwabiza, requested the Council’s support for “an urgent, dedicated and truly multidimensional response” to the threat by Explosive Ordnance Devices (EODs) both for the protection of civilians, and safety and security of peacekeepers. The top UN official in South Sudan Nicholas Haysom, told reporters that top on his agenda is to urge all leaders to fulfil their citizens’ expectations by holding timely elections and completing the young nation’s much delayed democratic transition. UNMISS

The President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said, “it is time for Somalia to take up full responsibility of its security. The achievement of this objective will not only benefit Somalia, but it will also contribute to regional and global peace and stability.” UNIFEED
