According to the UN, 339 million people will require humanitarian aid this year just to survive. Almost one third of these people live in countries subject to UN sanctions. UNIFEED

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, told the Security Council that “full compliance with human rights is the best antidote to the inequalities, unaddressed grievances and exclusion which are often at the root of instability and conflict.” UNIFEED

The UN Security Council condemned on Thursday a Taliban administration ban on Afghan women working for the United Nations and called on Taliban leaders to "swiftly reverse" a crackdown on the rights of women and girls. UNIFEED

Asked about the negotiations to extend the Black Sea Grain Initiative, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, said that he “can't say that the UN has not been undertaking efforts in the right direction, on the contrary”, but “there has been practically no result.” UNIFEED

Speaking at a Security Council meeting presided by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, said “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, in violation of the United Nations Charter and international law, is causing massive suffering and devastation to the country and its people, and adding to the global economic dislocation triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.” UNIFEED

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, said, “our proposal is meant to enable elections in Libya this year by widening the scope of actors involved in this national issue of paramount importance.” UNIFEED

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia told the Security Council that “in recent days, the Government has made clear through additional actions its commitment to the Final Agreement.” UNIFEED

The High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Izumi Nakamitsu, said, “Emanating from any arms transfer is the inherent risk of diversion of the equipment to unauthorized end users.” UNIFEED
