The Secretary-General takes note of the appeal judgement in the case against Jovica Stanišić and Franko Simatović and extends his thoughts to the victims, and survivors and their families who have suffered from the crimes for which both defendants have been found guilty, a UN Spokesperson said. The judgement marks the conclusion of the last case relating to core crimes that the Mechanism inherited from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. On International Day of UN Peacekeepers, Peacekeeping Chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix said United Nations peacekeepers, despite challenges, “preserve ceasefires from collapse” and “protect every single day hundreds of thousands of civilians.” UNIFEED

A UN Spokesperson said Fulgence Kayishema’s apprehension "sends a powerful message that those who are alleged to have committed such crimes cannot evade justice and will eventually be held accountable, even more than a quarter of a century later.” UNIFEED
