A number of UN agencies, including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and UNAIDS have said “they are appalled that the draconian and discriminatory anti-gay bill is now passed into law in Uganda,” a UN spokesperson told reporters in New York. UNIFEED

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said the adoption in Uganda of draconian new legislation targeting lesbian, gay and bisexual people was devastating and deeply disturbing, and called on President Yoweri Museveni not to promulgate it into law. OHCHR

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said more than 70 countries have laws that criminalize consensual same sex relationships and “implicitly encourage prejudice, hatred and violence” against LGBT people but stressed that “laws can change.” UNIFEED
