World leaders announced over US$826 million to Education Cannot Wait and the global challenge to support the education of 222 million girls and boys living in crises. ECW

Pledges from 18 countries and the private sector topped $826 million on the first day of a High-Level Financing Conference in Geneva today (16 Feb) where world leaders came together to seek funding for education for children caught up in emergencies and protracted crises. UNTV CH

Yasmine Sherif, Director of Education Cannot Wait said that the number of children and youth in armed conflict, has increased from 75 million to 222 million “over the past four or five years only.” UNIFEED

Launching the Education Cannot Wait’s (ECW) new Annual Results Report, Director Yasmine Sherif told journalists in New York that there are 78.2 million children in conflict affected areas “that don’t even go to school,” while another 190 million receive some education “but can’t read and write, they can’t do math.” UNIFEED
