The head of Amnesty International told the member states of the General Assembly “Inequality, injustice, environmental destruction and corruption are a toxic combination", adding "you cannot preach about human rights while practising mass surveillance.” UNIFEED-UNTV

The UN Millennium Campaign estimates that 67 million people, or one percent of the world's population, could follow their call to "Stand Up" against poverty this weekend. Campaign Director Salil Shetty puts the huge expected turnout down to "a fairly strong sense of outrage" in poor countries, and says the next US President should resist the urge to cut aid in view of the financial crisis.
