Citing escalating violence, challenging landscape in Abyei area, Peacekeeping Chief recommends Security Council extend United Nations interim force.

UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix told the Security Council that despite the improving relations between Sudan and South Sudan, it remains very unlikely that progress will be made in determining the final status of the Abyei area in the short to medium term. UNIFEED

UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix said, “we witness an unprecedented opportunity to resolve the border-related issues between Sudan and South Sudan,” adding that “both countries have never been closer to achieving sustainable peace with each other and with their armed oppositions, as they continue to support respective peace processes.” UNIFEED

On a visit aiming to express her solidarity with the women of Somalia, the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, called for the full participation of women in the country’s peace, security and development efforts.UNSOM
