UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, held a wide-ranging press conference in Geneva during which he commented, among others, on the issues of systemic racism, sexual violence in Darfur, the effects of cyclone Mocha in Myanmar and the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan. The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sudan, Volker Perthes, said that the short-term ceasefire signed by both sides of the conflict “is supposed to enter into force tonight, it shall remain in effect for 7 days, it is renewable, and it should allow civilians to move and humanitarian access to get to the people.” UNIFEED

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is rapidly scaling up its emergency operations in Sudan, every day reaching thousands more people whose lives have been upended by the ongoing fighting. WFP

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has deployed teams and, with partners, has rushed to deliver aid to new arrivals in Chad who are escaping conflict in Sudan. Another 30,000 refugees have been monitored arriving in recent days in Chad, bringing the total number moving from Sudan to Chad in recent weeks to 60,000. UNHCR

The Human Rights Council today opened a special session on the human rights impact of the ongoing conflict in Sudan, hearing the High Commissioner for Human Rights strongly condemn the wanton violence taking place in the country in which both sides had trampled international humanitarian law. The Secretary-General strongly condemned the looting of the main compound of the World Food Programme in Khartoum over the weekend. This is the latest violation of humanitarian facilities since the start of the crisis, which is in its fourth week, a UN spokesperson said. UNIFEED

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) today issued an advisory in which it urges states to keep borders open to people fleeing ongoing hostilities in Sudan and to suspend negative asylum decisions for Sudanese nationals outside the country who cannot return because of the conflict. UNTV CH
