The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “WHO welcomes the extension of the humanitarian pause in the conflict in Gaza, and the release of hostages and prisoners by both sides, the pause has enabled WHO to increase deliveries of medical supplies in Gaza, and to transfer patients from Al-Shifa hospital to other hospitals south of the Wadi Gaza.” WHO

The Security Council adopted draft resolution renewing the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) for another year, until 31 October 2024. The Russian Federation and Mozambique abstained. UNIFEED

China and Russia vetoed a draft resolution sponsored by the United States, while a second Russian-backed resolution failed to adopt having failed to get sufficient votes in favour, deepening the Security Council’s deadlock over any unified response to address the crisis in Gaza and Israel. UNIFEED

Secretary-General António Guterres told the Security Council that “where wars rage, women suffer,” and said, “twenty-three years after this Council adopted resolution 1325, women’s participation should be a default, not an afterthought. But that is not the case.” UNIFEED
