Secretary-General António Guterres told the Security Council that “where wars rage, women suffer,” and said, “twenty-three years after this Council adopted resolution 1325, women’s participation should be a default, not an afterthought. But that is not the case.” UNIFEED

The humanitarian response to the Karabakh crisis continued apace today as UN agencies and partners warned of urgent health needs among the more than 100,000 refugees left the Region for neighbouring Armenia. UNTV CH

Almost 89,000 residents of the Karabakh region - roughly half of the region’s population - have moved to Armenia since last week’s flare-up in fighting there and the total number of arrivals could rise to 120,000 in coming days, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said. UNTV CH

While UN humanitarians scale up the response to survivors of the flood disaster in Libya which wiped out entire neighborhoods and left thousands dead and many more missing, the UN’s aid chief warned that mental health care will be a huge issue for survivors of that catastrophe and the Moroccan earthquake last week. On the humanitarian situation in the area around the Lachin Corridor, UN senior humanitarian affairs official Edem Wosornu said, “It is incumbent on the parties not to impede or politicize any principled humanitarian effort. Responding to humanitarian needs is not an act of legitimization or recognition; it does not take sides and it does not yield to political influence.” UNIFEED

According to the UN, 339 million people will require humanitarian aid this year just to survive. Almost one third of these people live in countries subject to UN sanctions. UNIFEED
