“MINUSCA is working to remobilize all partners and is making optimal use of its good offices and its force to increase the contribution of international partners to the peace process and ensure, with all stakeholders, the credibility and integrity of the Agreement. It is in our common interest to work with the Government so that the guarantors and facilitators of the Peace Agreement of February 6, 2019, are fully involved in revitalizing the said Agreement through the implementation of the Roadmap for Peace and Reconciliation.”

“I encourage the Government to deploy all possible efforts to calm the political climate. I also call on the international community to continue supporting the organization of these elections, which stem from the Political Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation provisions. It would take some ten million US dollars to fund these elections fully.”

STORYLINE:

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the Central African Republic, Mankeur Ndiaye, today (22 Feb) told the Security Council that progress in the CAR "is real, but many challenges remain," and called on the Government and the international community to support the implementation of resolution 2605 "to bring stability, social cohesion, and development to all Central Africans in peace.”

Ndiaye, who is also the Head of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), said, "the active role of the Mission remains essential to support the necessary adjustments to the peace process, the contours of which are drawn by the Peace Agreement, the joint roadmap, the republican dialogue, and the local elections." These tools for peace, he added, "must be grasped fully and handled skillfully, always with the primary concern for protecting civilian populations."

The Special Representative said, "MINUSCA is working to remobilize all partners and is making optimal use of its good offices and its force to increase the contribution of international partners to the peace process and ensure, with all stakeholders, the credibility and integrity of the Agreement."

He encouraged the Government "to deploy all possible efforts to calm the political climate," and called on the international community "to continue supporting the organization of these elections, which stem from the Political Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation provisions," noting that "it would take some ten million US dollars to fund" the upcoming elections elections fully.

Security Council 2605 extend the mandate of MINUSCA until 15 November 2022, and outlined a range of mandated tasks from civilian protection to the promotion and protection of human rights.
