South Africa's first fully democratic elections are scheduled for April this year. On hand to help make the transition to majority rule as peaceful as possible are the fifty men and women of UNOMSA. Assigned by the Security Council in 1992, the UN observers work closely with the peace committees of National Peace Accord. Their presence is a useful tool in establishing and maintaining communications between former adversaries.
