STORYLINE:

The Sudanese government represented by First Vice-President Ali Osman Taha this week swore in council members to serve in the Darfur regional authority as provided for in the power sharing protocol.

Addressing a celebration held in Nyala, South Darfur State on Wednesday (16 January) to mark inauguration of the Legislative Assembly of Darfur Regional Authority (DRA), Taha said the government had committed to pay two million dollars for the Darfur Rehabilitation and Development Fund, to be paid in installments to the DRA.

The Acting Joint Special Representative of the UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), Aichatou Mindaoudou, also addressed particapants, saying the DRA Council marked an important milestone in the implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur. It completed the establishment of the DRA as the primary mechanism for not only the implementation of the provisions of the Document, but also for coordinating with the relevant tiers of the government the recovery and reconstruction efforts and projects in Darfur.

She added that all stakeholders could contribute to making institutions of governance such as the DRA council work for the common good, and therefore summoned "all hands on deck to help the people of Darfur realise their dreams".

First Vice-President Taha condemned recent violations at a number of areas in Darfur. He called on all the political forces to take part at a comprehensive national forum to discuss the major national issues, above all the formulation of the Constitution and Darfur issue.

The First Vice president condemned the kidnapping of humanitarian workers and sabotage of infrastructure equipment and banditry in the region, calling on the people of Darfur to abide by the law, and respect tolerance and rule of law in conflict resolution instead of fighting and instigating wars.
