“My fervent wish is that an event like this would never be necessary – that all our staff could do their job without facing any risks to their lives. Yet we know that United Nations peacekeepers and all personnel are increasingly exposed to high risk environments. We continue to focus on enhancing staff security. And we continue to call on Governments to uphold their responsibility to provide security – and prosecute those who target and attack UN staff.”

STORYLINE:

The United Nations today (14 November) held its annual service in tribute to its personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty from 1 November 2011 to 31 August this year.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Mrs. Ban were joined by the Presidents of the General Assembly, Vuk Jeremic and the Security Council, Indian Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri in lighting candles representing the eternal flame for the fallen staff members, and observing a minute of silence together with the guests present at the event.
While recalling that this year the United Nations saluted 29 fallen colleagues, civilian, military and police, across 11 duty stations Ban Ki-moon said, “my fervent wish is that an event like this would never be necessary, that all our staff could do their job without facing any risks to their lives”.

The Secretary-General added that the organization continued to focus on “enhancing staff security”, as well as calling on Governments to “uphold their responsibility to provide security – and prosecute those who target and attack UN staff”.

Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri, while stressing that continuous enhancement to staff security, safety system, emergency preparedness and risk mitigation were being made, he stressed that it was “imperative that the safety and security of UN personnel, civilian, and uniformed be accorded the top most priority for all included”.

Also addressing the memorial, the Vice-President of staff management, Paulina Analena said “we will not give up. Therefore do not count every penny or cent when it comes to our safety and security because we go where you request us to go. Ours is a selfless duty”.
