STORYLINE:
The Prosecutor for the International Criminal Court (ICC) briefed journalists today in New York on a warrant that the Court issued last week (1 March) against Sudan’s Defense Minister Abdel Rahim Mohammed Hussein.
He said that the Court had found that there were reasonable grounds to believe that Hussein bore criminal responsibility for 20 counts of crimes against humanity and 21 counts of war crimes allegedly committed in Darfur from August 2003 to March 2004.
Ocampo denounced that “rapes continue unabated in Darfur” although he said that the New York Times had produced some news about the issue “trying to present a more optimistic view.” However, he said that the ICC’s current information was that the situation in the camps continued to be under “genocidal conditions.”
He said that some NGO’s (Non-Governmental Organizations) were alleging the need to investigate Ahmed Haroun, the current governor of South Kordofan, Hussein as the Minister of Defence and Bashir as the President of the country for crimes committed in the South. But Ocampo said that the ICC had no jurisdiction in the South. “Our jurisdiction is just Darfur and we’re working there.”
Ocampo was asked about the recent photograph taken of the head of the UN mission in Darfur Ibrahim Gambari shown smiling with President Omar al-Bashir at a recent wedding of Chadian president Idriss Deby to the daughter of a Darfur militia leader in Khartoum. Ocampo said from a victim’s point of view that, “you will feel probably bad.”
