STORYLINE:

Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II and her husband Prince Henrik visited the Trusteeship Council Chamber today at United Nations (UN) headquarters.

The Council’s Chamber, a gift by Denmark and designed by renowned Danish interior designer Finn Juhl, is currently undergoing extensive restoration as a part of the major renovation of the UN headquarters in New York.

Originally created in 1950-1952, the Chamber has seen a series of alterations in 1964 and 1977. The current restoration of the Chamber is expected to showcase new furniture fittings by a yet-to-be-determined Danish designer and will be overseen by the Heritage Agency of Denmark.

The Trusteeship Council, one of the five main bodies of the UN, was created to address issues relating to decolonization. It suspended its work in 1994 following the independence of Palau, the last remaining UN trust territory.
