STORYLINE:

Former first lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos relaunched her political career today (26 March) by announcing her candidacy to run for the country's upcoming elections in May.

She is expected to run for the seat of the province of Ilocos Norte in the Philippines congress.

Her husband Ferdinand Marcos was the President of the Philippines for over 20 years and was sent into exile in the United States (US) in 1986.

As first lady, Marcos attended the United Nations’ (UN) first world conference on the status of women in Mexico City in 1975. She addressed thousands of women from governments, non-governmental organizations and human rights organizations gathered in the city.

She met with the then UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim and his wife during one of her visits to the UN headquarters in New York in 1981.

In October 1985, just months before the Marcos family went into exile, she was again at the UN to attend the First Ladies’ Conference on Drug Abuse convened by former US first lady Nancy Reagan. The meeting was also attended by Marcela Perez De Cuellar, wife of the fifth UN Secretary-General.
