STORYLINE:

The United Nations General Assembly adopted by consensus today a resolution acknowledging efforts by the two Koreas to forward the process of inter-Korean dialogue and reunification.

The resolution backed the summit earlier this month in Pyongyang between the North and South Korean leaders. It was the second summit in the history of the communist North and capitalist South.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the declaration as an opportunity to contribute to reconciliation, cooperation and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and pledged any United Nations support that may be needed.

The resolution on peace, security and reunification on the Korean peninsula was jointly sponsored by the two Koreas, in a new hope of the reconcilliation between the two neighbors.
