The World Health Organization welcomed today’s “historic” commitment shown by global leaders, at the UN General Assembly, when they approved a political declaration on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response.
Speaking during the high-level meeting in New York, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, thanked the President and all Member States of the General Assembly, saying “this is a very historic day”.
Tedros continued, “We may be tempted to think that the COVID-19 pandemic is history. But history teaches us that COVID-19 will not be the last pandemic. The question we all face is whether we will be ready when the next one arrives. As leaders, we have a collective responsibility to make sure we are ready.”
The WHO chief added, “We have a collective responsibility to protect our societies and economies. The political declaration you have just agreed today is a commitment that together, we will live up to our responsibility.”
After the meeting, speaking to journalists, Tedros said the document “is a strong signal from countries that they are committed to learning the lessons of the COVID 19 pandemic and to strengthening the world's defenses against pandemics.”
“For too long, the world has operated on a cycle of panic and neglect,” he added.

The political declaration was the result of negotiations under the able leadership of Ambassadors Gilad Erdan of Israel and Omar Hilale of Morocco. The document will now be sent for approval by the General Assembly.
