STORYLINE:

The UN chief António Guterres said, “Let’s transform the world. Let’s bring more justice and equality to our international institutions. Let’s rescue the SDGs and fight for the better future every person deserves.”

Kicking off an SDG Action Weekend, Secretary-General António Guterres today (16 Sep) spoke at the opening of plenary of the SDG Mobilization Day.

Guterres said that this week, global leaders are gathering in New York to discuss their plans and priorities for the future, but this week, this weekend, this house — the United Nations — also belongs to the people.

The UN chief reiterated that the Sustainable Development Goals are in trouble, adding that only 15 per cent of the targets are on track, with many going into reverse.

He highlighted, “The SDGs need a global rescue plan,” adding that “Monday’s SDG Summit will be the moment for governments to come to the table with concrete plans and proposals to accelerate progress. But we all need to step up.”

Guterres urged all to keep fighting for SDGs, to the members of the business community here today, “I urge you to see that sustainable development is in fact the best business plan of all. That upholding human rights, putting people before quick profit, and protecting the planet and its natural gifts are investments in future prosperity for all,” he added.

To the women and young people, the Secretary-General said, “keep calling out for change in your communities, and fighting for your rights and a place at every table.”

To the scientists, academics and innovators here, “a sustainable future depends on pushing the boundaries of human knowledge and finding new ways to serve all people. So keep going,” Guterres encouraged.

To the local authorities here, “the SDGs will not be rescued in New York. They will be rescued in your communities. So continue listening to the people in your communities, and embedding their needs and concerns across your policies and investments,” the UN chief reiterated.

Dennis Francis, President of the 78th session of the General Assembly also made his remarks.

He said, “The buzzword of the day is mobilization, which suggests a sense of urgency that we cannot ignore.”

Francis continued, “It is literally crunch time. Time to roll up our sleeves and turn our aspirations and our promises into reality. For the benefit of all.”

Carlos Alvarado, Former President of Costa Rica also spoke to the delegates.

“The essence of being human lies in our ability to shape our own destiny,” Alvarado said.

“Let us seize this opportunity. ¡No aflojar! Never give up - leaving no one behind and embracing the ideals of One Earth, One Family, One Future, embody a language of wisdom and beauty,” he continued.

But even more beautiful, the Former President of Costa Rica concluded, “it is its full practice. Let us act for decisive and coherent action is the true language of hope and love.”

Reekelitsoe Molapo, Co-Founder of Conservation Music told the decision makers in the room and out in the global world, “I want to continue to reiterate that you need to see young people as not just beneficiaries, but as equal partners for the successful implementation of agenda 2030.”

To maximize the SDG Summit’s impact, the Secretary General is convening an SDG Action Weekend, which will generate opportunities for stakeholders, UN entities, and Member States to convene inside the United Nations Headquarters and set out specific commitments and contributions to drive SDG transformation between now and 2030.

The SDG Action Weekend will consist of the SDG Mobilization Day on Saturday (16 Sep) and the SDG Acceleration Day on Sunday (17 Sep) at UNHQ in New York.
