STORYLINE:

The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the tropical storm Daniel caused “a calamity of epic proportions” in Libya, noting that “the true toll of this disaster is still emerging”, but local officials have reported over 5000 deaths, thousands more missing and over 35 thousand displaced and homeless.

Speaking to journalists today (14 Sep) in Geneva, Tedros said, “Even while the death toll is increasing, the health needs of the survivors are becoming more urgent. WHO is working with the Ministry of Health and partners to rush emergency relief to the affected areas. WHO is releasing 2 million US dollars from our Emergency Contingency Fund to support our response.”

According to him, “the floods in Libya are the second devastating disaster in a week to affect North Africa”, with the “earthquake in Morocco has killed almost 3000 people and injured many thousands.”

Tedros added, “These numbers will continue to rise in the coming days. Entire families are buried under the rubble, others are homeless, and some children lost both their parents.”

The WHO chief added, “Our information is that most roads have now been cleared, and search and rescue teams have been able to access the majority of affected areas. The Moroccan government is leading the response. WHO and our UN partners stand ready to scale up our response to provide supplies and technical assistance as needed.”

Moving on to next week’s United Nations General Assembly, WHO’s chief noted that “for the first time, the General Assembly will feature three High-Level Meetings on health issues, demonstrating how important health is to our world – today and for the future.”

The first High-Level Meeting, next Wednesday, is on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response. According to Tedros, “the outcome will be a political declaration that aims at mobilizing political will, and for strengthening the governance, financing and systems for global health security.”

The second High-Level Meeting, on Thursday next week, will be on universal health coverage, which all countries have committed to achieving by 2030 in the Sustainable Development Goals.

Tedros said, “Universal health coverage means that all people in a population have equitable access to the essential health services they need, without facing financial hardship.”

The third High-Level Meeting, on Friday next week, is on tuberculosis. In 2021, the disease killed 1.6 million people, or about 4000 a day, but Tedros noted that “this is a disease that is preventable and curable.”

Also speaking to journalists, Dr Joachim Hombach, the Executive Secretary of the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE), said that “vaccines that are based on the ancestral of the bivalent vaccine still do a good job in relation to protection of severe disease and death” and “this is the principle objective of vaccination against COVID-19.”

Hombach added, “One message is clear already. at this point in time. You should not be delaying vaccination if you are part of a risk group that requires vaccination, while waiting for the monovalent vaccine. So I think this is a very important message.”

“We always have to bear in mind in our efforts to get to equity in health that it doesn't start with getting more of an individual product out there. We’ve got to go right up and look at the characteristics of the products that we are developing and making sure they are optimised for the populations that are going to need them globally,” added the expert.

Dr Bruce Aylward, Assistanrt Director-General of the Universal Health Coverage Life Course, said, ““Every one of these products has advantages and disadvantages and one of the great things about mRNA vaccines is just how fast you can adapt them to evolving situations. But even that said, we are still finding some of those original products remain robust, right? How much do you actually need to tailor as you go forward? The important thing and others have emphasised it on this platform before is the best vaccine is the one that you can get the soonest.”

Aylward concluded, “When you have diverse platforms is that also you can diversify the geographic production. And so, it allows for more equity and so that's why we promote really this diversification because it will ensure more equity and more security as well.”
