3. SOUNDBITE (English) Dorothee Klaus, Director of UNRWA Affairs, Lebanon:
“The days of hostilities have left several hundreds of families displaced, some of which have returned, meanwhile. We've had destruction of habitat. Between two and 400 houses are expected to have been demolished within the camp and in the vicinities. And we've had an UNRWA school complex for over 3000 children violated and additional installations including other schools and a health centre possibly also damaged.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Dorothee Klaus, Director of UNRWA Affairs, Lebanon:
“I have been in the camp on Monday to meet with some of the refugees there in our health centre. And the image was that of distress, talks about children having been traumatized, women's hair having been turned white during the hostilities. I think this also needs to be understood in the context of multiple displacement that Palestine refugees have experienced over the past 75 years in Lebanon. Many of the camps have been destroyed not only once but several times.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Dorothee Klaus, Director of UNRWA Affairs, Lebanon:
“Every crisis is an opportunity to thresh out a roadmap for preventing this from happening. We're counting on a high-level meeting between various Palestinian parties and the Lebanese next week, which we will also participate in, looking at some of the mechanisms for the rehabilitation and reconstruction process. And some of these questions will certainly be asked on what can all parties do to prevent this from happening again.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Dorothee Klaus, Director of UNRWA Affairs, Lebanon:
“It is s not safe for any UN personnel to access these areas currently, we're also not having clearance from the Lebanese military to go inside those areas on the Lebanese military being in control of access to the Ein El-Hilweh camp.”

STORYLINE:

The Director of UNRWA affairs in Lebanon, Dorothee Klaus, today (10 Aug) said hostilities at the Ein El-Hilweh camp “have left several hundreds of families displaced,” as “between two and 400 houses are expected to have been demolished within the camp and in the vicinities.”

Talking to reporters in New York via video teleconference from Lebanon, Klaus said, an UNRWA school complex for over 3,000 children had been “violated and additional installations including other schools and a health centre possibly also damaged.”

After visiting the camp on Monday and meeting with refugees, the UNRWA official said, “the image was that of distress, talks about children having been traumatized, women's hair having been turned white during the hostilities.”

She said the situation “needs to be understood in the context of multiple displacement that Palestine refugees have experienced over the past 75 years in Lebanon” as “many of the camps have been destroyed not only once but several times.”

Every crisis, Klaus said, “is an opportunity to thresh out a roadmap for preventing this from happening” adding that a high-level meeting between various Palestinian parties and the Lebanese government will take place next week.

She noted that “it is s not safe for any UN personnel to access these areas currently, we're also not having clearance from the Lebanese military to go inside those areas on the Lebanese military being in control of access to the Ein El-Hilweh camp.”

According to UNRWA, a ceasefire in Ein El Hilweh camp has largely remained in place since 3 August with no further clashes reported. On 6 August, the Palestinian Joint Action Committee, comprising representatives of Palestinian political factions, issued a statement confirming their commitment to ending the fighting, establishing a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire, ensuring the withdrawal of armed individuals from the streets and opening roads.

The Committee also called on residents who had fled to return to their homes.
