STORYLINE:

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk today (6 Aug) began a four-day official mission to Iraq, at the invitation of the Government.

During his visit, Türk will hold meetings in Baghdad, Basra in the southwest of the country, as well as Erbil in the north.

This Sunday (06 Aug) the High Commissioner met with civil society representatives at the UNAMI (United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq) compound. “And then, of course, with all the subsequent developments in the country, where human rights is always the one thing that has suffered the most. But it's also the one thing that can bring the solutions the most, if there is a proper understanding of freedoms of human rights as such,” the High Commissioner said.

On this first visit to Iraq by a United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, he met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein, and also the Prime Minister Prime Minister of Iraq Mohammed Shia Sudani and the Speaker of Parliament Mohammed al-Halbousi.

The High Commissioner will also meet high-level officials in the Kurdistan Regional Government, and officials in Basra. He will also engage with civil society representatives in Basra and Erbil on a range of issues, including the human rights impact of climate change.

At the end of his mission, on 9 August, the High Commissioner is scheduled to hold a news conference in Baghdad at approximately 17:00 local time.
