STORYLINE:
Paolo Gentiloni, European Union (EU) Commissioner for Economy, said, “We can’t have sustained growth unless we have sustainable growth.”

Presenting the first-ever EU Voluntary Review (EUVR) of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development today (19 Jul) to reporters in New York, Gentiloni said that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) remain the EU “compass to guide us through the different crises in these years - the pandemic, the war, the independence from energetic point of view - and the effect of the pandemic and the Russian war of aggression have complicated our efforts, in particular, those related to the energy transition.”

According to the EUVR, since 2015, the EU has made progress across all SDGs.

Gentiloni said, “We continue to make progress toward most of the SDGs, especially good progress on those connected to social-economic goals.”

According to the most recent data, the EU performed best to ensure decent work and economic growth, reduce poverty, and foster peace, security, and inclusive societies and institutions.

Gentiloni highlighted, “Unemployment in the EU is at a record low, and employment is at a record high, not far from our own goal. We have a European goal which is 78 percent of employment, and we are at 75.”

However, external adverse shocks strain the post-pandemic recovery and progress on sustainable development in the EU and globally.

Progress slowed down from 2020 due to the multiple crises, sometimes leading to a reverse in progress.

On budgeting for the SDGs, Jutta Urpilainen, EU Commissioner for International Partnerships, said that with the level of investment needed to have a transformative impact, public funding alone “will never be enough.”

She added, “With the global gateway investment strategy, we aim to mobilize infrastructure investments up to 300 billion euros until 2027, with half of the investment targeting our sister continent Africa. We are using public funding and innovative financial tools to leverage private investments and also develop local business environment.”

Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, commented, “We very much encourage and welcome and appreciate the first EU voluntary review that was presented this morning in the High-Level Political Forum at the Secretariat. This is a clear demonstration of the leadership and commitment of the EU, the European Union, and its member states to the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.”
